How to segment an orange

What makes a great cook great? The little things. Like always having sharp knives… and knowing how to neatly segment an orange. And you can’t do the latter without the former, so sharpen up and listen up and we’ll show you how!

1. Slice the ends off your orange(s); this makes for a non-wobbly base on your board, plus makes peeling easier.

2. Using a super-sharp knife, peeled the orange in sections from the top to the bottom, removing as much of the white pith as possible. If you don’t quite get it all, cut any that’s remaining off once your fruit is peeled.

3. Holding your orange over a bowl to catch any juices, cut between each membrane to neatly cut out each segment. Add your segments to the bowl as you go.

4. Squeeze out the remaining orange carcass to extract as much juice as you can; use it in your recipe if possible.

5. Yay! You now have pro-grade, pith-free segments, ready to add to desserts, salads or whatever your little heart desires.

6. Not so much a step as a heads-up; you’ll be left with an amount of peel. You can use this in a batch of home-made marmalade, or you can candy it. Twist our arm hard enough and we’ll devise a recipe. Watch this space.
